An Ubar's Perspective
By: Trenton De'Shea
Administrator/Ubar of Lydius

Tal & Welcome to a Warrior's Thoughts

From the quiet motion of stillness to the motion of constant
and vigilant revision of one's understanding of the world around us we all take our perceptions and make our choices. ~Trenton De'Shea

A Warrior must be prepared to give all to maintain his honor.
Without honor there is nothing.

 Magicians of Gor, pg. 478

"Within the circle of each man's sword, therein lies an Ubar." ~Tribesman

I began as most Warriors do, the search for Honor lead my path.  Now an Administrator of a thriving coastal city many call me Ubar.  Long ago when I claimed Lydius with my Brother's in Arms the title was bestowed upon me and now as I tend to the administration of my city, many still use the title of Ubar as a reflection of their respect.  Their respect I take great pride in as all respect my Brother's is never commanded, it is earned.

That being said; what does an Ubar do?  In times of war an Ubar leads his men and in times of peace the Administrator does much the same thing. No man is ever an Island however and I am fortunate to have great warriors at my side.  My En'Sword overseeing all division of defense for the city, which are numerous. They include the Elite Swords, Sovereign Swords, City Guards, Kaiila Prides, Tharlarion Prides, Tarnsmen Prides, City Watch, Infantry and more.  Thousands of men all working for the same goal; the protection of our Home Stone, the glorious City of Lydius.  A thriving free port and long ago when I stepped upon her shores I had nae idea the destiny that awaited me.

How does one man lead thousands....how does one man find within him the strength.....of patience?

Through my en'vars the one thing above all else I have learned is the value of patience.  I have become a skilled listener; perhaps it seems a simple enough task yet it requires an open mind and the patience to not judge.  How does one not judge?

Patience; the ability to endure waiting, delay, or provocation without becoming annoyed or upset, or to persevere calmly when faced with difficulties.  The capacity of enduring hardship or inconvenience, emphasizes calmness, self-control, and the willingness or ability to tolerate delay.

Does this indicate to you that I do not get angry, that I do not raise my sword? I do both yet I have the patience to know when to wait to do both.  Long ago a very wise man told me, "Choose your battles wisely".  Which leads us back to patience.  A skilled listener I have become yet one must always find the "balance" in all things.  Patience must not be lead by inaction, patience is lead by tolerance of an open mind and the willingness to wait to judge.  No Ubar commands men, an Ubar leads by wisdom learned through en'vars of patience skilled through experience.

Long ago during a fierce battle my Brother's in Arms and myself seemed outnumbered, the strategy of combat had been established by our commander and as the prides began to fall we looked to our leader; to my shock he had retreated leaving his men to wage the battle without him......My Brother's looked to each other for guidance, who was to command us, and in that moment an Ubar was born.  Aii, I was very young and my Brother's and I equally skilled, and as we rallied together and became one, we gained the strength of patience, a wisdom learned and a battle that night won as the victory was nae in the battle won, the victory was in becoming, One.  A cohesive force that none to this day can penetrate, my Brothers and I, One.  The force of patience and the ability of wisdom learned.

Until we meet again as in all things take what you like, leave what you don't....

I wish you all well,

The Warriors of Lydius stand strong in their ideals and bonds of Honor.

Tre'Sword of Lydius
Captain of the Elite Swords of Lydius

Elite Swords

People still ask me, what is an Elite Sword?  I am often tempted to say, “All the Warriors of Lydius”, as my Brother's in Arms and I are equals.  Though the Elite Swords are a specialized division that is assigned to the full time protection of the Administrator, his companion and family. My life and sword are pledged to Trenton De'Shea, my Brother in Arms.  Trenton is a busy man and protecting him is not always the easiest of task, yet there is no other task I would rather be assigned.  I love him dearly and am honored to serve him and our beautiful city.  The Elite Swords move in silence and stealth and never do we allow Trenton from our view.  At times I know he finds us tedious but his protection is our primary objective.  We remain at his side, and our training involves many weapons and skills that the details are best left unspoken.  Any attempt to harm Trenton and you have met your death is all need be said.

My duties also include Tre'Sword of the city.  I coordinate with my Brother's in Arms in our cities defenses and the constant rotation of patrols and watches throughout the city and her borders.  Overseeing our thriving free port is Trenton, all swords and division commanders report to Trenton who coordinates the entire cities defenses with his warriors.  We are a team of warriors, unlike any others you will find in any city of Gor.  There is but only one, Brotherhood of Lydius.  My Brother's and I come from different backgrounds and cities throughout Gor, yet our common bond is the love of Lydius, our Honor and each other.  Speaking for myself, I hail from Turia, a savage barren land that remains within me.  My past having molded me into the man I now am and Trenton having guided me into the warrior I now am.

As lar'torvis rises in the Gorean sky my day begins.  House Rising Storm is home, yet I am often found in my cabin in the Northern Forest as well.  Memories within Ardor Perturbatio Furor never forgotten and to this day, missed.  I often seek solitude and the peace of the forest when I am not working, although that time is infrequent as my work is my priority.  I am Captain of the Elite Swords of Lydius and Tre'Sword of the City.

When not at Trenton's side I am often overhead, sailing the skies on Amadeus, my vicious war tarn whose talons are stained with the blood of the foolish.

I am a warrior, a tarnsman and my allegiance to the Brotherhood of Lydius until I take my last breath.

HAIL LYDIUS!

I wish you well,

En'Sword of Lydius
Commander of the City Guard of Lydius

A Day in the Life of an En'Sword

Time certainly does fly, faster then any brother of the wind or beast on the ground. I am now just past my 9th en’var as a Lydian warrior. Never had I dreamed of being En’Sword to any city much less a city like Lydius. I had always heard of the prestige and the honor there was in being an En’Sword and there isn’t one day that goes by that I do not thank Odin for the blessings bestowed on me and placement in the path of my Ubar Trenton De'Shea’s life. First and foremost, En’Sword merely means first sword. It doesn’t mean that you are the best man to the Ubar/Administrator because Trenton De'Shea surrounds himself with the best men in all of Gor. Often times when meeting others, my title seems to put them on the defense, make them tense, or roll out the red carpet and toss down dina petals. I am just one man with a heavy load and there is no pomp and circumstance to the work involved in carrying that load and if it weren’t for my brothers in arms, the load too much to handle. It also doesn’t mean that you get special privileges or treatment and those of you who think that the title brings you such are not ready to be the first sword to any city. But the position of En’Sword has taught me a lot about myself, has put my honor and integrity to the test forcing me to hold them high above the rest and in so doing, the position hasn’t come without its challenges. So I thought I would go through my day to enlighten my fellow goreans of just what a day in the life of this En’Sword entails.

As well as being En’Sword to this glorious city I am also Commander of the City Guards. Lydius has an impressive body of defense with an Infantry of 100,000 foot soldiers, a pride of over 1,000 tarns, a cavalry of 10,000 kaiila and 8,000 tharlarion, and a fleet ranging over 1,000 ships. My being Commander of the many divisions of this city’s defenses makes up the bulk of my duties. All division leaders apt in their abilities report to me as En’Sword and being their Commander has these leaders collaborating with me to prepare our city’s defenses for wartime.

Specifically, my day starts out before the rise of Lar-Torvis, flying formation with one of many prides of Lydius ensuring that the tarn netting is securely in place, that our men are swift and efficient in their skill with that netting. Our formation flying is a form of rotation for wartime. We prepare our men for air strikes and train each rider on what to expect in such as well as what Lydius expects of our pride. Captain Tarnstrike has everything under control with the prides, a very apt Commander himself. He sees to the 1,000 tarn and rider squadrons that make up those that protect our city and surrounding area’s skies. He goes through the various strategic rotations as well as the training of his men, reporting to me any unauthorized activity so that the Ubar has sufficient information to be bring justice to those that seek to provoke our retaliation. In wartime, my position would be to fly alongside Captain Tarnstrike, leading our men into battle by tarn.

Also from tarnback, I am able to watch the changing of the guard, a strategic rotation that the division commander uses to ensure the protection of our citizens within our city walls. Several rotations are in place and no one but the division commander knows of which rotation is set up when. I am aware of these rotations only because I have studied and learned the purpose and reasoning behind it all but only when I watch the guard do I know which strategy the men are using. With so many soldiers precision, responsibility and discipline is what is needed from The Captain of the Infantry Prides. The changing of the guard can be a spectacle to watch and some citizen’s stop what they do to watch these men at work.

I break formation from the pride to fly once over the city, seeing the Kaiila and Tharlarion Cavalry hard at work out along the entire perimeter of the city helping to ensure the foot soldier's watch along the walls, towers, city borders, up and down the Laurius River, the Northern Forests and out along the shores of the thassa. Jared Chardan, Captain of the Kaiila Mounted Cavalry and Vandalarius Dema, Captain of the Tharlarion Mounted Cavalry as well as Se’Sword to Lydius are both excellent warriors and I come to relay on their watch, again, reporting to me anything significant on that watch. The Ubar has no need for worry about his city’s safety.

The harbor, I honestly can say do I ever worry or need to involve myself in. Between the Admiral, the Captain of the Fleet and the Harbormaster, they have everything well under control. Admiral Cronus Cristian need only report to me when the fleet needs to collaborate with ground forces and in peacetime, I just get to sit back and enjoy the tranquility of the ships rotations. Most of my watch can and is done by tarnback.

Each hand I read reports from the Captain to the Elite Swords, Kory Rakin, who is also Tre’Sword to this city. He prepares and trains this special unit of 1,000 men to ensure the safety of our Ubar with secret routes that only he and the Ubar know about. This unit is strictly for the safety of Trenton De'Shea, their sole duty. The Captain to the Sovereign Guard as well sends me a report each hand. This special unit was specifically selected to ensure the integrity of the Lydius Mint. The unit alone has 1,000 men divided into small battalions that guard the mint inside and out with a deep loyalty and are trained to take into custody on the spot, no questions asked if anyone gets the notion to help themselves to Lydius coin.

My day continues on the ground reading and writing reports, meeting with weapons specialists to ensure weapons are functional and loaded properly onto warbirds, mounts, and ship alike, checking passes and the background on those that request city passes. Determine that each tower and the main city gates are safe from vagrants. I also check the stability of the men posted to the marketplace, ensuring that all shops and vendors are safe and I work with the En’Merchant to ensure vendors know how to evacuate when requested to. I make sure the manifesto to all imports are safe, that each import is sound and non-contaminated. I know I've left something out for my duties vast and each day brings new challenges and the need to re-modify processes used on a daily basis. I am the one responsible for the pile of rence that my Ubar finds himself buried under, making sure he is aware of all that his city defenses are structurally in tact.

My city relies on me, Brennus Tormaigh for protection and help in time of need. Each and every citizen, from the Ubar to the street urchin is my responsibility and being En’Sword is my life’s pleasure, my life’s destiny and as long as my Ubar will have me, I intend to live and die for the soil known on Gor as Lydius.

HAIL LYDIUS!!

Odin's blessings,

Brennus Tormaigh

Captain of the Kaiila Mounted Calvary of Lydius
Manager of the Tre'Moon Kaiila Ranch

I have been honored with the appointment of Captain of the Kaiila Mounted Calvary of Lydius.  A position I take with great pride and seriousness.  I am responsible for coordinating and commanding the Kaiila Calvary for the defenses of Lydius.

My duties are many and include vast acreage of land.  My patrols of course involve the scheduling of thousands of men, patrolling from the shores of the Laurius River and several passages into the Northern Forest, and along the entire border of the Meadowlands.  I work with the Swords and the Ubar determining the rotation of the patrols in coordinating the defenses of our city.  The patrols never keep to the same rotation, as this is a key element in the strategy of our cities defenses.  At the end of each day I leave my reports with the Swords of the City and our Ubar as to any incidents or concerns we may encounter each day and evening.

I am also manager of the Tre'Moon Kaiila Ranch, I am responsible for the health and maintaining the kaiila prides.  The health and fitness of the beast is also a top priority.
The protection of our Home Stone and her citizens is my primary objective.  I am a warrior first and foremost and my skills honed from my past...A Taharian with a primitive savageness of the plains I crossed, en’vars of battle on the plains taught me well.

I began riding in the desert as a boy, riding a kaiila comes as naturally as walking does to me.  The Tre'Moon Kaiila Ranch breeds both types of kaiila:

Kaiila, Desert
A
lso known as sand kaiila; this omnivorous animal is related to the southern kaiila and similar in most aspects barring pelt color and rearing of young; pelt color is tawny or black and young are suckled for a length of time. The men of the Tahari Desert use this mount. Its milk can be drunk; it is reddish and salty due to the amount of ferrous sulfate within it.

 Kaiila, Southern
L
arge (20-22 hands) carnivorous mammal with long neck and silky fur; its eyes have 3 lids; is viviparous has incredible stamina (capable of covering 600 in a day) and can be domesticated for riding in spite of its vicious temper. It has a rich gold to black pelt. The kaiila is a mammal, but there is no suckling of the young, who begin hunt within hours of birth.

I have much assistance at the kaiila ranch and we employ expert trainers to tend to the beast.
I am very proud to be a rarius for the city of Lydius. After arriving upon her shores, there was no other Home Stone for me...I have said it before and will say it till I die, there is only one Brotherhood of Lydius and I am proud to walk alongside my Brothers in Arms.

 Hail Lydius!!

I wish all well,

Jared Chardan

En'Builder of Lydius
Master Shipwright of Lydius~SRoG
Manager of the Steel Talon Shipyards

The Building of Ships

It seems a simple enough task, yet it is far more involved than it appears if done correctly.

I have been assigned En'Builder of Lydius, a title I have taken on with pride and as the Lydius fleet grows so do my ahns.  My day begins in my office at the shipyards:

Reviewing the design for the ships when the lumber mill had brought in the first shipment of the day, the tem wood was stacked for easy access and the crews double checking to ensure the diameter of 60cm or more.

Tur wood was also being unloaded and checked for the proper diameters, as no construction would begin until all was varied.  The lumber mill did an excellent job of premeasuring and sending what was needed but the crews at the yards diligent to ensure the quality of all ships. The needle timber stacked and measured as we took inventory of the first timber deliveries of the day. The keel laying was about to get underway as I checked again the specific design wished.  We were in the first cycle of the building when I stood up, looking over the order for the Medium Ram Ships, taking a stretch just before walking over to join the Men in the building process.  We began lifting the heavy planks into place one by one, working as a team as the warm rays of lar'torvis bathed the shipyards.

As the shipwright I would decide which trees were best for the various complicated tasks the wood had to do when it was cut to shape and fitted into the ships.   Different parts of the ship came from different parts of the trees.  We took advantage of naturally grown 'joints' where branches grew from the main trunk. These are stronger than man-made woodworking joints, and avoided the need for clenched nails in the construction.  I also sometimes recycled planks from 'decommissioned' ships, filling in gaps and joints with carefully made patches and refitting them into a new ships.  Melted iron was also used as the cities iron works forged what pieces were needed.

Many logs needed to split and my axe got plenty of use.  I started a split with my axe, and whilst the axe was still lodged in the timber, a tur wedge was then hammered in to the split next to the axehead. The axe can then be hammered in further with a wooden mallet. Thus making the split travel down the length of the log.  Another wedge is added, and the first is banged further in. The axe can then be removed and sometimes hammered in further along the split.  So the process went on, with most of the work being done by the wedges saving the axehead. The split can be controlled to some extent, but a good shipwright would select a tree that hadn't twisted as it had grown over the en'vars.  By splitting the timber in this way, we were working with the wood so as to get the greatest strength out of it.  Larger logs were used as planks, as we left half of the tree unslit for the bigger parts of the ship like the keel.

Watching as plank after plank began forming what was now appearing to look like the great ship it would be.  The planks were being fastened with bronze and iron nails, and in some places wooden pegs that fitted as if they belonged.  During each stage of progress I walk the length of the ships looking for any imperfections to construction of the hull.  I a
